There’s a song by The Black Crowes called She Talks to Angels—a soulful, haunting melody that has always resonated with me. When I hear it, I feel seen. Because the truth is, I do talk to angels. And when I’m really quiet, I can hear them talk back.
Most people move through life thinking they’re alone, but we are never alone. Our angels walk beside us, whispering guidance, sending signs, and sometimes, if we’re really listening, speaking directly to us. I know this because they’ve saved me more than once.
The Recent Chicago I-94 Experience
Last month, I was driving home on I-94 from Chicago, the snow falling more heavily than I expected. If you know I-94, you know that this is a well-traveled expressway, often very busy. The road was clear, but I did not account for the ice. As some cars slowed ahead of me, I applied the brake too hard and lost control of my car. I spun around and around. I don’t know how many times. Every time I was about to hit the barrier wall on the left side of the expressway or the guard rail to the right, I somehow turned away from it. (By the way, my poor sister was on the phone with me while this happened and I can only imagine her terror as I was yelling something like “Oh my God” over and over.) But then, the car started to slow down and it eased slower and slower into the right hand shoulder, and I was able to stop perfectly parallel to the guardrail. Not a scratch on my car. My body fully intact. I looked behind me and saw that the cars had all stopped and the ordeal did not cause any accidents. Somehow, there were no cars next to me during this wild spin out.
As I caught my breath and told my sister that I was okay, I thanked my angels for protecting me. Even though I experienced a deep fear and sense of tension, I also had a knowing that I would be okay the entire time, no matter what happened. And, I had a deep knowing that my angels were at play.
As I continued my drive home, the snow thickened. I admit that I white-knuckled it at 40 mph the rest of the way home. The moment I pulled into my garage and stopped, I gave a prayer of thanks and joy… and I cried. Yes, because even though I was so grateful, I still experienced a tremendous amount of fear (terror, perhaps?). Both emotions can be true at one time. Luckily, I had a session with my spiritual coach the next day, and she helped me acknowledge and release the fear. It’s important to release stressful emotions or they get stuck in the body and cause dis-ease. (I can help you with that, by the way, through both Spiritual Coaching and/or Bioenergetic Testing.)
Stuck in the Snow a Couple of Years Ago
Another time, I found myself stuck in the snow, tires spinning, frustration rising. No one was around, and I wasn’t sure what to do. I could feel a brewing sense of panic. But I did not let the fear rule me. I closed my eyes and called upon my angels. Please help me find a way out of this. As I sat and took a few deep breaths, I decided to call my road side assistance service. Just as I was looking for the phone number, a car pulled over to the side of the road and a nice young couple got out. They offered to help and I was overjoyed. They both pushed me out of the snow and I was able to be on my way! I offered money for their assistance. Being the lovely people that they were, they politely declined. I expressed my deep appreciation for them and told them that I had asked my angels for help and that clearly they answered my call by sending these two lovely angels in physical form. I gave a deeply appreciative prayer of thanks and made my way home safely.
How I Talk to Them
People ask me how I communicate with angels. The truth is, it’s not about rituals or elaborate prayers. It’s about openness, stillness, and trust. I talk to them like I would a friend—sometimes out loud, sometimes in my thoughts. (Pro tip: They can hear you better and take action more strongly when you ask out loud, even if it’s a whisper.) When I’m really quiet, I can hear them in return. They speak through intuition, through feelings, the thoughts in my head, and through those inexplicable nudges that guide me toward or away from something. They send us all signs—a feather on the sidewalk, a song on the radio at just the right time, a dream that lingers long after waking. Don’t doubt that they are there. It is their joy to see us happy and living the life we are meant to lead. They truly can help us in times of need. I even ask them to help me find things or to notice something magical on any particular day.
Last night, I went to bed thinking about finding a photo to include in this blog. Just take a look below for what the angels left for me this morning after last night’s beautiful snowfall – an angel wing on the window!
We all have access to this Divine connection. The angels are always there, waiting for us to acknowledge them. The question is, are we asking and are we listening?
Next time you’re in a moment of uncertainty, pause. Be still. Ask. And then, listen. You might just hear them, too.
